Monthly club meeting - Corkhill Palms Club House

March 10 - 9:30 am  - Wednesday, (Updated from previous post) Pat Johns, watercolorist, did  a step by step painting with everyone, using a new technique in watercolor.  The same technique can be used in Oil and Acrylic.  She supplied everyone with paper, pattern, brush.  Some brought a backing board to tape their painting down to.  Pictures will follow later, hopefully.

It was an inspiring, learning experience for everyone.
A good group (15) turned out for a great meeting. 
New officers were voted in and can be seen in the officers column.

We are having a workshop at Jackalope Ranch on Wednesday the 24th, we arrive at 9 a.m. and I have taken pictures and have enlargements of different scenes at Jackalope and we paint till noon and have a beautiful lunch then back to painting till 2 pm.  The Charge all- inclusive is $30.00 but we will have no structured lessons, but tables to work at, washrooms for clean-up and no stairs.  I need to confirm how many by noon tomorrow so will let Rita know and perhaps you would like to join up.

Next structured workshop is the 3rd of March - Cid Winsome, she will be painting a photo of RCB using watercolor, pen and ink cost is $20.00 and we set-up at 8:45 and ready to paint by 9 a.m. , bring a sac lunch and we are usually done around 2 p.m.

Also, Marge asked that I mention that the Tickets to the Critique and Luncheon on March 17th, be sold ASAP and the numbers submitted to Marge so she can coordinate with the Miracle Hot Springs Resort and Spa on the closing date of March 5, 2010.

Also, on the meeting of March 10, 2010 we will be doing a Workshop with Pat Johns, in watercolor, Pat will supply the palette and paint  and one brush ( bring more if you like and your own paint if you prefer).  The meeting is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. as always and hope to start painting at 10 or shortly thereafter.  Look forward to seeing everyone there at Corkhill Palms.  Any questions contact Pat at 760-775-1484 or Rpjohns1@aol.com

Just a reminder we have scheduled a oil painting workshop for Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at Corkill Palms Clubhouse. The workshop is $30.00; runs from 9am to 3pm bring a sack lunch.  Our scheduled instructor is Frances Poole. MFA.  We need a minimum of 6(six) artists to confirm this workshop. Currently we have four people signed up. Need two more the most we can have for the workshop is 10(ten). I need to know by February 15th, 3pm cutoff so we can proceed or cancel.  Thanks, Caroline

Notice Rancho CasaBlanca Annual Art Show

Fariad - Feb 17 Artist Demonstrator - Try to be there...

Fariad`s passion for painting began when he was a young boy. He hosted his first exhibition with 36 paintings when he was just 12 years old, and he hasn`t put the brush down since.

He grew up painting the beaches, people and rainforests of his home, the Caribbean island of Trinidad. This established the foundation for Fariad to develop his skills as an artist.
Fariad left Trinidad when he was awarded an art scholarship to Syracuse University in New York.

After two years, he dropped out and bounced around to different schools while constantly honing his craft. His greatest education came from painting on the streets of Los Angeles. Fariad sold his "Wildland Images" to everybody he met—the rich, the poor and the indifferent. He feels privileged to have made a living as an artist and has won numerous accolades for his work.

Fariad now spends most of his time at the Parrish Pioneer Ranch in the San Bernardino Mountains of California. He paints the people, the places and the things he sees in Oak Glen, Calif., where his gallery is located.

Artist Statement: "I have been documenting this poetry in life for some 38 years now. I currently live in the United States, and my paintings have expanded beyond wildlife to include landscapes and Western art. I try to expose the image with deliberate and rhythmic brushwork and a mesh of thick and thin paint to try and capture the life and feeling of what I am looking at."

DESERT ART CENTER

   Monday, I walked into the Desert Art Center with my daughter, Lynda.  Caroline Lundgren and Cynthia Vaughn were there to help us and show us around.  We saw some truly beautiful things.

 

   They have a great display of art there this month.  We enjoyed looking at all the pictures and sculptures, collages, gourd vases, etc. A few are displayed below.

January 20 Meeting

Terry Masters was the guest demonstrator today.  He moved to Palm Springs in 1967 and loves to plein air paint the desert scenes.  He says he looks for things that catch his eye and does his best to render them in an honest, painterly way.  He tells his friends he is "the painter of whatever"  He has a website at:  terry@desertpainter.com

CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON

     Members went to the home of Marge Schnell for our annual Christmas Potluck luncheon. Marge lives in Desert Crest Country Club and we followed one another there after the business meeting at Corkhill Palms Motor Home Park. Marge has a beautiful home and it was decorated for the holidays.
Of course all the food was scrumptious and we all ate too much.

The Desert Art Center, the oldest non-profit artists’ cooperative in the valley, will present a new show from 6-9 p.m., Friday, Dec. 4th at 550 N. Palm Canyon Dr., Palm Springs. This show will be in conjunction with the Friday Night Gallery Walk in the historic uptown district.
Meet some of the 119 artists as they display works in: sculpture, painting, glass, jewelry and gourds. Enjoy free refreshments and the miniature art show. Shop for unusual holiday gift items with part of the proceeds going for scholarships to local high school art students.
This center is a great art resource to the community. The DAC has several outreach programs. Local artists have a place to display their work. The public can take classes, enjoy Plein Air Painting days, and attend monthly demonstrations by artists in a variety of mediums. The gallery is open daily 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
The DAC in partnership with the Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs, and Cathedral City High Schools will sponsor a student art show, January 16- 23 at the DAC auditorium. All the events are free, except for classes. 1-760-323-7973

RCB Sharing Christmas Program

It’s that time - to think of those who do not have the ability to provide a Christmas for their children. Here at RCB we have the “Sharing Christmas Program”. We have added, by request from some of you to have an entire family to provide the Christmas for. This year your “Sharing” if needed so badly as the homeless and needy have increased so much it will be a hard time for so many. So please Share.

The Christmas Tree is set-up in Clubhouse 1 and the names of needy children are placed on it. Please go and choose a girl or boy to share your Christmas with; by finding some items on their wish list, wrapping them up and for convenience placing them in one big bag ($1.00 store has some good ones) with the Christmas card attached (that lists the CM# of the child, this is our tracking number, ensuring that the right name receives the right gift. Bring the bag down to Clubhouse 1 and place under the Christmas Tree, we will make sure they are delivered. Any questions call Pat 76-775-1484 or come to Lot 46.
We also, have the names of a few needy families, if you can manage to provide a special Christmas for more than one, contact Pat 775-1484 and she will let you know what is available.
We have many adults in the valley who are homeless and in great need for warm clean clothing; if you have anything a used jacket for example, make sure it is clean, Christmas wrap it and write on the label, men’s Size Large or Women’s Size small. Place these under the Christmas tree as well and they too will be delivered to the needy. Another great gift is a warm blanket or sleeping bag, as it gets colder not everyone has a bed indoors.
During the winter there is always a shortage of food and we will have a food bank container set-up in Clubhouse 1 to put your donations into, if you are purchasing a gift card please deliver them to Lot 46, Ron and Pat Johns Lot #46, 775-1484 or Michelle Tracy Lot #81, 775-3660.
We want to thank you for helping to make this Christmas a little brighter with your donations. The gift of giving is a great boost to all of us.

RCB Art Group

We have enjoyed seeing some new members to our Art Group and great catching up with summer activities with everyone.

The Floral Still Life with Diane Morgan was such a great lesson, a good time had by all.

We have Darlene Greer on November 26^th and she will step us through a Desertscape, make sure you are signed up for the class.

On December 9^th we have a new artist instructor joining us, Sid Newsome, she has come and taken photographs of RCB and that will be our subject matter.  So sign up now for the opportunity to have a memento of our favorite place.

Every Wednesday we paint whether we have an instructor or not, so drop by and see the Art Group Clubhouse 1 Wednesday at 9 a.m.

We met at Corkhill Palms Clubhouse today and Rosalie Fredrickson taught us how to paint on silk scarves.  Oh! we had paint everywhere.  We turned out some beautiful colored scarves. See them above.  There will be more on this later but tried to get this on right away.  Enjoy!!

WHAT ARE ARTIST TRADING CARDS?

I was fascinated with some miniature pictures painted by Leola and thought I would try to do some...then I found out about Artist Trading Cards.  They are miniature pieces of art that are traded around the world.  Artists create, trade and collect art at organized "swap" events, either in person or online.  It is a great way to meet other artists and share your work.  The only official rule for ATCs is the size: (2.5 x 3.5)

How did the movement start?

In 1997, M.Vanci Stirnemann, a Swiss artist, created 1200 cards by hand as part of an exhibit.  On the last day, he invited others to create their own cards and trade with him during the closing reception.  After that, the movement took off as other artists organized major "swap" events!  Today, there are ATC swaps in almost every major city around the world.  There are also many online swaps.

How do I create ATCs?

Most swaps are open to any media, materials or techniques as long as the card fits into a standard trading card sleeve.  Art can be original, limited edition or series.  Artists should include the following information on the back of the card: name, contact information (email or address), title of piece and number if it is part of an edition or series.  ATCs are traded, not sold.  However, there are some artists who choose to sell cards.  Cards that are sold are called Art Card Editions or Originals (ACEO).

How do I trade cards?

You can locate an in-person swap in your area, find an online swap, or organize your own swap.  There are a number of Web sites that others have created to help artists get started.  They can be found by doing online searches using key words such as "artist trading cards."  You can also find out more information by visiting www,strathmoreartist.com/arc
